I (Natalie) first met Tracey when visiting a local Farmer's Market on a bright Saturday morning. I was immediately drawn into her booth due to her large vibrant array of flowers screaming at me to come look and smell. The flowers were just stunning but I realized something else as I chatted with Tracey... She was a hardworking person that sells quality flowers.
I try to buy locally whenever possible. I hope after getting to know a real life flower farmer a little bit through this blog that you will too and/or be inspired to look for local flower farmers near you!
Tracy was asked the following questions:
How did you get started in flower farming and why are you passionate about it? How does growing flowers help you slow down and enjoy/appreciate life more (mindfulness)? In what ways do flowers help you be more thoughtful in your life? In what ways do flowers give you hope?
Tracey's Response:
"I have a BS in science and math, but decided to stay at home with my four kids. They are grown
now and I decided to start my own business doing something that I really enjoy. I took several classes to become better educated as a flower farmer and continue to add more
classes to my resume.
My intensive type farming is so incredibly hands-on. In some ways, these plants that go into the
ground really are my babies. Throughout the season, I: germinate, water, fertilize, prep beds &
soil, plant and then nurture that plant and defend it against all Mother Nature throws at it. Just
when it starts to bloom, I cut it at the perfect time to ensure the greatest vase life for you.
I will over analyze your expression when I hand you that bouquet because I am so proud of the
flowers that I have nurtured for all these months.
I think nurture is the reason that I enjoy flower farming. I nurtured my kids all those years and
now I have lots of flowers to nurture everyday. It is so fulfilling to watch a beautiful flower grow
from a tiny seed.
I use organic practices on my farm. I am nurturing the microbes in the soil by feeding them
organic matter and not using harmful chemicals that will destroy them. By making a healthy soil
microbiome, I am also making a healthy home for the good bugs and pollinators that will attack
the pests. This gives me hope for the future of our earth."
